Ratha Sapthami:
Ratha Saptami is an important Hindu festival associated with Lord Surya (Sun God). Lord Surya riding a chariot driven by seven horses is worshipped on this day. It is also known as Magh Saptami or Magha Saptami, Jayanti or Jaya Saptami, Surya Jayanti and Maha Saptami.

As documented in the Yuddha Khanda of Valmiki’s Ramayana, Surya has the power to grant one’s wish for good health. When Sri Rama was exhausted from his battle against Ravana, the sage Agastya taught Sri Rama the popular prayer called Aditya Hridaya Stotra, which is addressed to Surya. Sri Rama recited the prayer three times and regained his strength to vanquish Ravana.

Thai Poosam

Thai Poosam ( தைப்பூசம்) is celebrated on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan/Feb). Pusam refers to a star that is at its highest point during the festival. The festival commemorates both the birthday of Lord Murugan (also Subramaniam), the youngest son of Shiva and Parvati, and the occasion when Parvati gave Murugan a vel (lance) so he could vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman.

Significance of Shivratri:
Shivratri, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is celebrated on the moonless night of the month of Phalguna (Feb / Mar), which is the fourteenth day in the krishnapaksha or dark half. Owing to a special planetary conjunction, spiritual practices done on this day are considered to be especially auspicious and beneficial. There is a reference to this in one of the Puranas, where Shiva himself tells Parvathi Devi [the Divine Mother] that this day is particularly dear to him, and that those who perform the prescribed austerities on this day will be freed from all sins.

According to the Puranas, during the great mythical churning of the ocean called Samudra Manthan, a pot of poison emerged from the ocean. The gods and the demons were terrified as it could destroy the entire world. When they ran to Shiva for help, he in order to protect the world, drank the deadly poison but held it in his throat instead of swallowing it. This turned his throat blue, and since then he came to be known as Nilkantha, the blue-throated one. Shivratri celebrates this event by which Shiva saved the world.
